a moment of levity

Several weeks ago, my 4 year old daughter had school pictures. Being the drama queen that she is, it was decided - by Her Majesty - that she would wear her Sleeping Beauty dress, crown and shoes to school for pictures. In a moment of weakness or camaraderie (don't know which) I agreed to this plan. Then had to explain to the baby sitter that it was okay - I knew it (I) was crazy - but it was okay.
In any event, she took her SB get-up to school in her backpack to wear for pictures. Wasn't sure how the staff would handle it - until today.

Just got a call from the photographer. They tell me they have two pictures of aforementioned darling daughter. I am momentarily puzzled by this. She says "Let me describe them and you can tell me which one you would like to purchase." I am thinking - okay, but how can I possibly know which one I want to purchase without looking at them. She proceeds to tell me that in one, DD has on a tiara and is holding a scepter. I say - "Yep, that's the one I want." She then says, "I guess the other one is for the yearbook."

I am saddened. I wanted the tiara shot in the yearbook.

Thank God for kids!

Scotland. WOW! It's funny how certain things translate - in spite of time, space and land of origin. The innocence of children - that qualifies in most circumstances. Yes, we believe in Santa and the tooth fairy in Texas too.
In truth, if my 6 year old daughter could pull a tooth every day for the rest of her life, she would - only so the tooth fairy would pay her a nocturnal visit.

best wishes to the highlands of Scotland and all her bright-eyed beautiful children.

Thank you from Alba(scotland).

My 9yr old daughter read your comment and has passed on the tip about pulling teeth daily to her little brother so that they can share the money.

The thing is being male is my son may just do it. Infact I might also. They say that the male species never mature, simply grow taller. Or perhaps it's the fact Scots are mean.

And best wishes to the distant land of Texas.

No offense, but the 'mean' Scots have NOTHING on my Texan four year old darling daughter. I am in the midst of a baby sitter crisis so I had a fill-in start the past Thursday. My DD was so awful, MEAN and tyranical, the fill-in babysitter came by Friday morning to tell me that she
"could not do this job" and had decided she did not want children of her own.
I have three of these precious little creatures. And when I tell you it is never dull around here - that is usually quite the understatement.

I quite like your daughter. I have two younger brothers and frequently led them astray when we were growing up. Us Big Sisters have to stick together. Tell her to let me know if she needs any Bis Sister Tips!
my best to you and yours!

I too work from home which is why this baby sitter situation is such a HUGE deal. In addition, I have a work DEADLINE from HELL this Wednesday - as in bonus-contingent deadline.
I appreciate your encouragement - hope to catch up on this blog as soon as I meet this deadline - which I WILL do! Have all these thoughts and ideas rolling around. a new picture from my folks I want to include. I miss having time for myself. You think that's selfish?? Probably.
Should have appreciated it more when I was young, stupid and single.

I watch tv and see the storm move towards Texas. I pray that you anf your family are not in its path.

There you are!
No we are not in the immediate path of Hurrican Rita. We are several 100 miles in-land and the most we will see is rain and moderate winds.
And we need the rain. A welcome relief to the dry Texas heat.

you okay?

I am wonderful as usual. Another beautiful week has passed. It is good to know you and yours are safe.

A busy week and I got into trouble on thursday when I went to pick up my 5yr old son as he had fallen asleep in class. (I had let the kids go to Disney on Ice in the City Wednesday night with their friends and family) They didnt get home until 10pm. Oh well I am a bad parent, what can I say. But he had a riot and the teach needs to relax.

The trees are starting to turn colour and my favourite season approaches. The purples and the greens are being replaced by the golds and the yellows. Beautiful indeed.

Be safe, be happy.

That was gorgeous! And exactly what I needed this Monday morn. It seems you have a dreamer's soul.

And a soft heart - trouble with the teach, eh? :) Disney On Ice - yes, I think we would have gone to that on a school nite too - especially if the Disney Princesses were in attendance.

I love autumn too - but have to go elsewhere in the country to appreciate the change of leaves. We don't have a great many trees in our area - at least not the kind that make a glorious fall transformation.
I lived in Colorado's Rocky Mountains for a few years and LOVED it when the Aspen trees went golden. Their leaves would shimmer in the wind and it looked like gold strewn across the hillsides. Still miss that.

We got some wind over the weekend from Rita and exactly three rain drops. Is very dry here.
Best to you and yours.
well well,

Glad to see you weathered the rain!!! I live in the Country so am surrounded by trees. I imagine Colorado is a beautiful place. You write well and your description of things paint a clear picture in the readers mind.

Glad you liked Knock on the duir. Duirwaigh. Translated, roughly means mighty oak. Its Irish Gaelic and is a similar language to Scots Gaelic. So apologies to any Irish readers if I am slightly wrong. But in my language its what it means.

I read back and I see I am rambling. Apologies.

Ramble away. I appreciate the distraction.

If ever you make it to the states, Colorado is a must see. Just don't know which time of year is best. If you are an avid skiier, then winter, of course. The rockies blanketed in white - the evergreen branches weighed down with a fresh snow. First tracks. It's a natural high. check out vail.snow.com

If a hiker and outdoorsman, then summer-time. The abundant wildflowers and waterfalls rushing over rocks from the winter run-off is worth the hike up the Continental Divide.

And of course Autumn with her aspen trees white bark in stark contrast to the golden shingles. And the crisp bite of coolness in the air.

Early spring is pretty dirty and muddy from the run off. My kids would be right at home. :)

My Mississippi was once a gorgeous place to visit too. My desire is that one day it will be again. I know so many that have lost so much. I just ache for them. And feel so helpless to make a difference. I think sometimes that if I didn't have kids and grown-up responsibilities I'd be over there, cleaning up - one broken board at a time.
one last link - www.wlox.com
-Under the videos - "Gulfport: before and after Katrina" These images - I know all of them. Stayed at the hotel with my kids - they had this GREAT pool area with a lazy river. Sea World, the curved aqua awnings, went there a gazillion times as a kid. It will break your heart.

thanks for listening.
